40 species A record breaking day today from home. Quite a bit of activity brought in one new garden species; Lesser Whitethroat observed a short distance away in a neighbours hedge. The same hedge yielded several Common Chiffchaff a pair of Common Whitethroat a Garden Warbler (only my second record for home) and only the second Reed Bunting I have recorded from home.

It was the 6th consecutive record breaking month with 57 species recording the next closest August was last year with 49 species recorded. Overall total for the yard now stands at 95 species.

30 Aug

Well if you have good days and average days it goes without saying you will have to have some poor days. Yesterday was a poor day. Mainly because we were away from home for the whole afternoon and the weather was appalling in the morning. The highlight was a juvenile Kestrel which was hovering just behind our back yard at only a few yards away and about 20 feet high. We had superb views of it’s mastery holding itself and turning in the strong wind as it looked for breakfast.
